Abstract

FMCG supply networks are dealing with hitherto unseen worldwide difficulties. The world economy is suffering greatly as a result of the recent Russia-Ukraine war; food prices have increased and FMCG sector of the UK supply lines have been severely disrupted. The COVID-19 epidemic put a great deal of strain on supply networks across several sectors prior to the war. Customer demand, price inflation, regulations, digital attacks, and climate change all act in tandem with these challenges to constantly assess the FMCG supply chains’ robustness. On the contrary, customers are still requesting lower costs, and competition drives up the need for further increases in productivity. Thus, the task facing businesses is to increase productivity simultaneously strengthening the resilience of their supply chains. By maintaining its targeted level of efficiency, a supply chain with resilience can continue to respond to the effects of an unforeseen disruptive incident. Meanwhile, innovations, quicker product development, larger output capability, and increases in general system performance are brought about by the advantages of scale and educational possibilities made possible by the expenditures in resilience. This paper attempts to characterize the primary vulnerabilities that influence FMCG supply chains, along with the methods that experts can employ to reduce and triumph over the consequences of these shortcomings, in considering current difficulties that FMCG supply chains encounter as well as their prospects for resilience. This study centers on three distinct forms of vulnerability, each of which represents one of the three primary flows—materials, information, and money—that define a supply chain. With a primary approach and qualitative data analysis process though the conduction of interview, the study develops a significant amount of data that enables it in gaining effective considerations.

In the UK, the supply chains for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) encounter several obstacles as a result of customer and decision-maker interactions during physical distribution, production, wholesale, and retail. The FMCG business operations might benefit from implementing the Industry-based technology as a potential solution to these issues (Nozari, Szmelter-Jarosz and Ghahremani-Nahr, 2022). The enticing qualities of technologies can reinforce the digitization and automation of the FMCG supply chain.             The requirement to manage large quantities, a variety of goods, strict deadlines, and fluctuating demand patterns while maintaining product quality, conformity, and cost-effectiveness along the supply chain is what makes FMCG logistics so challenging. The FMCG business climate is complicated, unpredictable, confusing, and volatile in emerging nations as a result of global economic depletion. FMCG companies have to address rising client demands for personalized products and meet the growing need for products that are both economically and environmentally sustainable in today’s uncertain business environment (Shakur et al., 2024).

Industries are being revolutionized by digital innovation, which also boosts competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience. Block chain, IoT systems, and machine learning algorithms allow for data analytics, real-time visibility, and quick response to market shifts. Robotic systems are appealing to FMCG companies because they are precise and repeatable. The capacity to promptly adapt to operational disturbances using adaptable contingency planning and forecasting, encompassing material procurement, logistics, and product and service delivery, is known as supply chain resilience. The UK’s present supply chain problems are caused by worldwide material shortages, labour shortages, and transportation delays that coincide with abrupt increases in demand, especially for consumer items and building supplies (Sodhi, Tang and Willenson, 2021). FMCG companies must take a multi-pronged approach to procurement, strive for variety in their transportation networks, improve inventory management, streamline procedures to reduce supply chain risk, and use supply chain technology to increase visibility and agility to create a robust supply chain. Due to the depletion of the global economy, FMCG logistics which are typified by high volumes, diversity of products, stringent deadlines, and variable demand are complicated and unpredictable. FMCG companies have to address rising consumer demands for personalized products as well as the growing market for items that are both economically and environmentally sound in this unpredictable industry (Tarai, 2020). Thanks to digital innovation, industry has become a feasible choice with substantial consequences for resilience, sustainability, and industrial competitiveness.

1.2 Problem Statement

Over the past years, the FMCG sector in the UK experienced a range of supply chain risks therefore; it has been a problem for the consistent availability and affordability of packaged goods (Končar et al., 2020). The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, unknown risks linked to Brexit, and other similar events have made people unveil the existing weaknesses of FMCG chains, which in turn calls for improvement of the resilience of the supply chains to external impacts.

COVID, political risk, and regulatory changes are important drivers in the FMCG supply chain since it shift the location and increase the variability of demand. When the pandemic first came out, it led to increased awareness of weaknesses and led to stock-outs and other problems with logistics (Ivanov and Dolgui, 2020). Conflicts and trade wars also affect the supply chains as they cause disruptions and scarcities (Christopher and Peck, 2004). There are regulatory changes, particularly those after Brexit and they bring in issues that slow down compliance and functioning. These occurrences demand supply chain flexibility armoured so that product access reflects customers’ expectations within such a dynamically sensitive market segment as the FMCG.  However, while the FMCG sector plays a crucial role in the economy of the UK, as well as in the consumers’ quality of life, there is a scarcity of research focusing on the FMCG companies’ contingency measures regarding supply chain vulnerability, including the related operational tactics and systems (Madhavi and Wickramarachchi, 2021). Knowledge on such indicators will assist in the formulation of the current policies, and strategies, and also the development of the plans in the supply chain of this sector.     

1.3 Research Rationale

There are several reasons why this research study on the supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector of the UK is being done (Madhavi and Wickramarachchi, 2021). Firstly, the FMCG sector is among the most important and largest sectors in the UK economy, and the stability and elaboration of the supply chain require enhancement to ensure the economy’s stability and further development. Consequently, the disturbances of supply chains in the FMCG sector can yield dire consequences on the access of a citizenry to basic products, functioning organizations, and society welfare. Secondly, the global incidences and issues impacting the FMCG industry in the recent past have brought to the foreground the significance of studying supply chain management strategies and practices that lead to more resilient supply chains (Neboh and Mbhele, 2021). From divulging the various risks that the FMCG industries endure to presenting the available measures of risk management, and assessing the performance benchmarks for the industry, this research study can prove beneficial for industry professionals, policymakers, and scholars. This research will help address some of these challenges in the FMCG supply chain improve supply chain competitiveness and sustainability for the UK businesses and reduce the impact of disruption on the environment (Končar et al., 2020).

1.6 Significance and Scope

FMCG is relatively a very crucial business sector in the UK since it plays an important part and fulfils the needs of the economy (Shakur et al., 2024). It contributes significantly to the stability of economic development since interruptions may harm stability, create gaps, and change the prices or availability of various goods. FMCG experiences complexity and pressure at both operational and strategic levels; studying the cases of resilience in this sector might help devise better solutions to supply chain issues and cut waste and inefficiency. Optimising the supply chain of FMCG international products can help the firms located in the UK improve their competitiveness by offering quality FMCG products that meet consumer demands (Autere and Sandnes, 2023).

To successfully analyze the extent of security in the supply chain of the FMCG sector in the UK, it is essential to have a theoretical foundation that captures how digital tools can be properly integrated. Existing theories that shed light on the subject include the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which gives a basic understanding of the way perceived ease of use of the technology along with the perceived usefulness of the technology influences the intentions of the stakeholders in the adoption of the technology (Sheel and Nath, 2020). UTAUT and its extended version, UTAUT2, conceptualise some of the factors like performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions that jointly determine the use of technology (Tamilmani et al. 2021). Furthermore, in the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), there is a clear understanding of how attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control affect a person’s decisions and behaviour toward the adoption of a certain innovation. 

 Thus, this research aligns with the theoretical framework by combining TAM, UTAUT, UTAUT2, and TPB models, aiding in the identification of the factors influencing the adoption of digital technologies in the context of the FMCG supply chain (Van Droogenbroeck and Van Hove, 2021). In a practical perspective, the research provides a blueprint for leveraging and integrating digital technologies that can optimise supply chain readiness, given the fact that FMCG companies seek avenues on how best to implement and optimally deploy digital solutions for a resilient SCM of their products. It also guarantees that the study will be theoretically meaningful as well as significantly helpful when advising on the ways of strengthening the supply chain in a vital sector.

Facilitating the enhancement of can also help the sustainable development of the FMCG industry in terms of decreasing unwanted environmental consequences that often result from disruptions and encouraging greener practices (Neboh and Mbhele, 2021). This research study aims to give an empirical insight regarding the challenges and opportunity framing the supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector of the United Kingdom and will propose strategies that could help the sector to overcome such disruption and therefore make a positive impact on the economy and the society in general. Therefore, some of the major factors that are focused on in this research study are supply chain mapping and risks, potential and actual supply chain resilience, supply chain agility and interoperability, supply chain collaboration and coordination, regulatory and policy analysis, performance measures, and cross-network comparisons (Autere and Sandnes, 2023).

1.8 Summary

In summary, interactions between decision-makers and customers provide issues for the UK’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) supply chains. These problems may be solved by putting industry-based technologies like block chain, robotic systems, IoT platforms, and machine learning algorithms into practice. But threats to the business like Brexit and the COVID-19 epidemic underscore the need for increased resilience. This study examines supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG industry with an emphasis on rivalry, seasonal fluctuations, and market demand. It analyzes resilience, measures adoption hurdles, and looks at tactics employed by top companies. In addition to offering ways for overcoming disruptions and having a beneficial influence on society and the economy, the research intends to provide insights into possibilities and difficulties.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Introduction

The “Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)” sector is the most promising industry of the United Kingdom due to the presence of greater consumer demand and the presence of different world-class companies. New technology and consumers’ ever-changing demands are continuously upending the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods sector. Consumers want inventive things, which imply manufacturing a greater variety of products faster and in larger quantities. Spending by customers is also increasing in new areas, necessitating an extended supply chain. Throughout the chapter, the FMCG sector will be evaluated with a focus on the United Kingdom’s supply chain resilience. It will also focus on the challenges of the supply chain impacted by the pandemic, political upheaval, and many more. Fresh avenues develop significant possibilities for business. Furthermore, research from Statista indicates that ecommerce is growing faster each year than traditional “brick and mortar” businesses. It is expected that consumers’ desire for novel product offers, such as healthier and environmentally friendly solutions, will present new chances for FMCG firms. As per the views of (Elfawal et al., 2021), the expansion of the “fast-moving consumer goods” sector is being impacted by rising middle-class earnings and improved living conditions in the majority of the nation’s cities. Industries are now more productive thanks to established channels of distribution along with creative strategies. Their main products have helped them to outperform their rivals and thrive in the rapidly evolving consumer goods industry.

As per the views of Alfarsi et al., (2019), Supply chain management’s (SCM) objective is to use effective SCM to maximise advantages for customers along with preserving an edge over competitors. It’s an indication that supply chain management organisations are working hard to create and run their networks as profitably and efficiently as they can. The supply network including the information technologies necessary for its coordination encompasses all stages of the development of the goods, including acquisition, manufacture, distribution, and marketing. As mentioned in the study of Ozdemir et al., (2022), because of increased international rivalry and shorter lifespan for products, FMCG firms are facing severe pricing pressure. Through the use of sophisticated transportation solutions, businesses can more effectively handle this degree of competitiveness in the rapidly growing FMCG sector. Ranking sales professionals according to experience, abilities, preferences, and additional variables is one of its numerous advantages. Businesses may see an increase in revenue if individuals decide to dedicate greater amounts of time to their establishment compared to their commutes.

There is some importance of supply chain in the array of FMCG industry. This is mainly due to the relevance of it in the industry. As per the study of Aityassine et al., (2022), Businesses in the FMCG industry frequently face industry-specific difficulties, especially in the area of logistics management. Several of the challenges are short lead times, rising stock levels, proximity to vendors, accountability, and confidentiality. In the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods industry, the consequences of inadequate supply chain optimization might be so severe as to put competitiveness in jeopardy. Slow-moving inventory might soon turn into dead stock, which would result in an overall loss for the business. A broken cold room or other piece of equipment could bring down the whole supply chain. A growing area of study called supply chain management is driving businesses to address this issue if they want to succeed in the competitive marketplace about sustainability over time and competitiveness.

Numerous academics have noted that the competition nowadays revolves around supply networks rather than groups. According to Mubarik et al., (2021), information is seen as a crucial, not tangible commodity along with a major credible element that forms the cornerstone of consistent progress and a sustainable competitive edge. Even though knowledge management (KM) transforms data, expertise, and academic literature into enduring worth by identifying beneficial information for operations management alongside expanding the openness to and accessibility of lucrative understanding at an appropriate moment to the advantageous person, it includes respect within the dedication it gives to goods, operations, and people in general (Queiroz et al., 2022).

As per the views of Kazancoglu et al., (2022), optimising the combination and alignment of inventory, demand, and interactions to effectively and profitably fulfil customers is another definition of supply chain management (SCM) methods. According to recent research, businesses frequently utilise performance assessments or assessment of suppliers to pinpoint particular supplier weaknesses and create strategies to fix them. These initiatives might include site inspections, accreditation of the goods and procedures of the manufacturer, assessment of the manufacturer’s transportation, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness, as well as target development. According to the views of Tarigan et al., (2021), “effectiveness and efficiency” have both been conceptualised as “crucial metrics for assessing the operation of supply chains.” “Cost-containment and performance reliability constructions” constitute two renowned measures. “Cost-containment indicators” include things such as increased disposal of assets, logistics expenses, “inventory-holding charges, and cost-in and outbound activities.” The “fulfilment of orders rate, turnover of inventory, precautionary inventory obsolescence, and the quantity of goods under claims for guarantee are only a few of the topics covered by reliability indicators” (Tarigan et al., 2021). Not only the factors mentioned above are linked with attaining the process of supply chain, but, there are factors such as accurate inventory management, strategic planning for the scenario strategically along with building collaborative partnerships in the UK FMCG industry.

The flexibility of supply chains is essential to ongoing survival in the modern world; it may no longer be considered merely a catchphrase used in conferences. There are about three multifaceted problems that are now really creating issues for FMCG companies in the United Kingdom.

Though the Covid-19 pandemic has not affected the world population and business recently, the impact of the worldwide lockdown cannot be overlooked due to its significance in global supply chains. Global supply chain exposures came into stark relief in a startlingly short amount of time due to the “COVID-19 outbreak.” The “Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)” firms faced many obstacles (Munir et al. 2022). The COVID-19 interruptions presented significant problems for supply chain managers, particularly in terms of devising plans to mitigate the impact and provide workable solutions to bolster “operations and supply chain resilience.”

“Environmental, social and governance and Sustainability Commitments”: A Sustainable Shift

2.10 Literature Gap

This research seeks to address the gaps that were noted in the literature review regarding supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector. Some earlier works have discussed more global strategies of resilience (Khan et al., 2022), while the literature on the application of advanced digital technologies in increasing the resilience of supply chains for FMCG companies has been limited (Lee et al., 2021). Moreover, insufficient investigation regarding the effects of some emerging global politics on the supply systems has been conducted, especially in the FMCG sector (Teece, 2018). This knowledge gap this research seeks to fill by exploring how these tools are deployed to create resilience and the impact of geopolitical tensions like Brexit as well as the Russia-Ukraine war on FMCG supply chains in the UK.

2.11 Summary

CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction

This methodology concerns a predominant primary qualitative analysis to determine supply chain resilience in the FMCG industry in the UK. The study employs semi-structured interviews as the main data collection tool for select FMCG managers of leading FMCG firms (Queiroz et al. 2022). These interviews will attempt to identify participants’ knowledge, ideas, and approaches concerning supply chain disruption, risk, and preparedness. Due to its ability to provide detailed, non-numerical information, the study aims at establishing the problems experienced in the sector by focusing on the best practices and effective solutions that may improve value chain vulnerability in the UK FMCG industry.

3.2 Research philosophy

Interpretivism is the most appropriate research philosophy that can be used to study the resilience of the FMCG supply chain in the UK because, as has been observed, it assumes that the ‘reality’ of supply chain actors and their experiences are subjective and social. This philosophical approach agrees to the fact that reality is a social construct and that knowledge is constructed from the act of practice (Piprani et al. 2021). In the context of supply chain resilience, interpretivism makes it possible for the researcher to explore how the supply chain professionals’ view and experience challenges, disruption, and uncertain events.

This paper seeks to understand the experience of stakeholders who are significant to the supply chain of FMCG through applying an interpretivist paradigm (Shakur et al. 2024). This includes knowledge on their perceptions concerning the risks, decisions made and the course of action taken to improve the stability. Interpretivism is especially informative in this sense as it is more concerned about the context, recognizing that different organisations and supply chains have their particular issues that may be influenced by a range of internal and external factors. It does this in a way that enables an understanding of how different players in the FMCG area manage disruption to their supply chain and achieve resilience.

As a result, the research will be using semi structured interviews so as to get rich data from FMCG managers (Şababoğlu and Özden 2024). It will be possible to get a deeper understanding of the participants’ attitudes and opinions, thus exposing assumptions they make, and knowledge that underpins their behaviour. Thus, the analysis of these narratives becomes essential for the study to find out what general patterns and practices support supply chain resilience.

Also, its flexibility in the repeated development and interpretation of research results concerning qualitative data is helpful since it supports the cyclic approach in qualitative analysis. This also helps in tracking the fluctuating supply chain resilience because of changes in several risks and challenges as well. In sum, this work allowed applying the interpretivist philosophy that helped to investigate the human and social aspects of supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG sector and discuss possible ways of enhancing organisational preparedness for disruptions.

3.3 Research approach

A deductive research approach will also be relevant when exploring supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector in the UK since it aims to validate theories and frameworks relevant to a certain context (Bowers et al. 2024). This type of research starts with a general theory or hypothesis concerning supply chain resilience and then goes out in the field to gather data to either support or distinguish the hypotheses.

In the deductive approach to studying supply chain resilience, this step seeks to get theories and models from the existing supply chain management, risk management literature and resilience. For example, the elements comprising the supply chain resilience model can be used to generate hypotheses and are well defined as resilience, agility, flexibility, and redundancy are as well. These hypotheses might include such statements as “Companies from FMCG sector, having high level of supply chain flexibility, reveal higher level of resistance to disruptions”, or “The availability of diversified suppliers speaks about higher level of supply chain resilience of companies from the FMCG sector” (Ozdemir et al. 2022).

In a deductive research methodology data collection may use questionnaires, structured interviews or it may use secondary sources of data including reports in the industry, performance statistics and case-studies. It offers a logical and systematic way to connect variables and analyse cause-and-effect relationships of not only the subject matter including supplier diversification, inventory management, and logistical flexibility, but also other aspects of the supply chain resilience.

Further, the deductive approach makes it easier to check the discrepancy between the real life findings and the expectation from the theories so as to enhance the understanding of how general principles of supply chain resilience may play out in real life scenarios. This approach can also bring attention to areas that current research theories may require further development or which may give rise to new theories, for the improvement of knowledge regarding supply chain resilience and for the benefit of practitioners within the industry.

3.4 Research design

When it comes to the research design, an exploratory study can be appropriate when the supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector in the UK is being investigated because this type of research is conducted in an environment where there are low levels of understanding of the relevant patterns and relationships (Neboh and Mbhele 2021). As supply chain relationships are most often very complex and constantly evolving, particularly in the context of the FMCG industry, an exploratory research design enables an open-ended examination of how these supply chains approach disruption, risk, and uncertainty.

As a result, the goal of an exploratory research design in this case is to determine the factors that affect supply chain responsiveness and to learn about the strategies that FMCG firms can use to improve their supply chain disruption coping mechanisms. This does not design research with a hypothesis that is expected to be tested but it aims at developing hypotheses as part of the investigation process. This is especially the case in operation in the FMCG/CG sector where disruptions may emanate from different factors such as natural disasters, political instabilities, or changes in demand patterns.

Techniques common in an exploratory research design are mostly descriptive and these include interviews, focus group discussion, and case studies (Akyıldız and Ahmed 2021). This enables the researchers to obtain extensive information from the professionals in the supply chain such as managers, executives, and the logistic personnel on their experience, perception, and implementation. Also, exploratory research might entail the use of archival data to find out new developments and trends on the given subject in the industry reports and market analysis.

Exploratory research design allows the changes in the research procedure as new data appear during the process (Casula et al. 2021). This is made possible by an iterative process thus allowing the study to improve and target on the probably more influential aspects of supply chain resiliency as this is realised. Thus, while pursuing this process, the research can reveal rather surprising findings, show some best practices in this field, and gain a better appreciation of the challenges associated with the building and sustenance of strong SCs in the FMCG sector. Lastly, through exploratory research design, it is sought to lay a general understanding that can be helpful for consecutive research studies and serve the practitioners to devise better strategies for supply chain resilience management. It is believed that through analysis of various factors and corresponding supply chain strategies, the results of this research can help to build more resilient supply chains in the UK FMCG industry in view of possible future challenges and disruptions.

3.5 Data collection

Data collection is also an essential aspect while studying about the supply chain responsiveness in the context of the FMCG sector of the United Kingdom (Munir et al. 2022). This includes collecting and analysing data which have been collected by other researchers, organisations or institutions in the course of their research. Primary data on the other hand is specific to the research topic and can help in identifying deficiencies in the existing state of supply chain resilience standard and real-life application.

When it comes to this research, sources can include industry reports, market research, government publications, journal articles, and white papers from consulting firms that operate in the supply chain management field. These sources typically provide measures on numerous dimensions of supply chain management including inventory status, lead time, supplier performance as well as the effects of disruptions. Furthermore, one can also obtain qualitative experience-based understanding from the cases and industries which illustrates typical supply chain issues and how the concerned organisation has managed them.

The advantages of data which are obtained from Primary research include the following. Rather, it is an effective method to obtain as much information as possible for a shorter amount of time, which allows building a more profound understanding of the general framework of supply chain resilience in the FMCG industry (Mohajan, 2020). It can also be used to make cross sectional comparisons in terms of time, space and company performance hence enabling the identification of trends. For example, studies of first hand experiences of the industry professionals on the performance of the SC over similar disruptions will be useful and highlight the different drivers that are strength of the supply chain, technology incorporation, or management of risks among others.

However, there is a need to take time and lay down criteria to assess the suitability of primary data sources. According to these contexts, researchers need to take into account the reliability of data, relevance of data, and the relevance of data in the context of given research objectives. This is why cross-checking data and triangulation is critical in order to avoid making the wrong conclusions based on inaccurate or outdated information.

3.5.1 Sample and Sampling Method

In choosing participants for this research, purposive sampling technique was used whereby only individuals possessing reasonable knowledge and familiarity with the topic under study: supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG industry were selected. In purposive sampling the sample is taken with the view of getting information on a subject matter that is under discussion. In this case, the target respondents that include managers, logistics and procurement officers involved in differing aspects of the FMCG supply chains were chosen to get systematic and particular information. This method enables the researcher to reach those people, who personally underwent through the issues and complexities of the FMCG supply chain. The use of purposive sampling guarantees that an essential comprehension of the aspect is engendered because participants involved in the analysis are purposively selected to give meaningful information (Campbell et al. 2020).

3.5.2 Participants/Population

The study engaged 10 subjects chosen based on their knowledge of the UK FMCG sector in the supply chain context. The participants were professionals in the SCF role such as supply chain managers, logistics coordinators, procurement officers, and risk management professionals practicing in FMCG firms. The roles granted them real-life exposure of dealing with supply chain management, and as such installed them with the needed knowledge as to how to integrate resilient strategies as well as risk mitigation measures and other functions in operation. The participants cut across multinational firm the FMCG companies and smaller firms within the region giving a general view of how the sector is immune to challenges. The research however sought to interview individuals from various positions within various organizations to ensure that it got a holistic approach to the issues that affect supply chain resilience within the FMCG industry.

3.6 Data analysis

The use of qualitative data analysis is an essential feature from exploratory analysis of supply chain resilience in the context of the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in the UK. Focusing on the multifaceted and rich phenomenon of the practice of managing supply chains, this method examines the qualified experiences and attitudes of trade specialists (Ermes et al. 2022). Through the qualitative analysis, the researcher is able to gain an understanding of the disruptions that affect the FMCG industry, an understanding of how the companies Establishment react to these disruptions the various factors that make these industries more resilient and uncover new practices that make the supply chain much stronger.

The data for the current research have been collected through interviews that involve supply chain managers, executives and logistics from the FMCG sector with the use of predominantly self-administered questionnaires. These interviews are expected to provide a more elaborate understanding of the issues and prospectus relating to sustaining fairly robust supply chains. Besides quantitative data, focus groups and case studies could be applied to collect qualitative results with the aim to obtain the listeners’ opinions and present the results in the context of a particular organisational environment.

It has been described above how the analysis of qualitative data works in detail. First, the data have been transcribed in detail to have a clear idea of the content of the data (Allsop et al. 2022). Subsequently, dataanalysis have been utilised in order to identify themes and patterns of the study by portages in their response to research questions. Leveraging this approach involves text coding, in which certain segments of the entire written information are tagged depending their relevance to certain themes like risk management strategies, supplier management, the technology management, as well as leadership in resilience management.

It thus seeks to compare and contrast how different FMCG companies are managing supply chain resilience through thematic analysis. It aims at discovering the nature of organisational resilience and its determinants that consist of organisational culture, decision-making procedures and the outside environment. It also searches for the thematic patterns that might arise throughout the analysis process so that new data is being discovered.

Therefore, by emphasising the qualitative components of supply chain resilience, this kind of analysis can give detailed and substantive insights into all human and organisational factors that are so central to the management of supply chain disruptions. The conclusions made out of qualitative data could be used to define the set of recommendations, used in strategic planning and formulation of the policies increasing the overall supply chain readiness of the UK FMCG sector.

3.7 Research limitations

When analysing the findings of the proposed research that investigates the SCM resilience in the context of the FMCG sector of the UK, some limitations of the study should be noted. These may have an effect on the generality of the study, its scope, and depth in producing findings which are, therefore, qualified when read.

1. Limited Scope of Data Collection:

Collection of data is largely based on interviews conducted with the supply chain professionals (Jha et al. 2020). That is why this method provides rich information, however, it should be noted that the results can only be used to make conclusions and establish relations within the participants of the primary research, but not in the entire FMCG sector. The manner in which the participants for the interviews are chosen, normally through convenient sampling, introduces a bias that may not allow for the core views of different types of FMCG firms; from small firms to multinational firms to be ascertained.

2. Subjectivity and Bias:

An essential component of qualitative research is that there is often some level of subjectivity in the study from the participants and the researcher (Priya, 2021). 4. Challenges in Measuring Resilience:

The concept of resilience is complex and has many facets; its measurement and quantification, therefore, presents a considerable methodological difficulty (Umunnakwe et al. 2021). Concerning the research proposal, factors that lead to resilience are quantitatively defined while methods that consider them are qualitative that could reduce quantitative analysis of the success that certain strategies would attract or the comparative analysis of resilience in two or more organisational structures.

5. Access to Data and Confidentiality Issues

Gathering actual supply chain information from the organisations under study may be difficult because of the issues of secrecy and rivalry (Hastig and Sodhi 2020). Some organisations may not be ready to disclose some information concerning their supply chain plans and weaknesses hence missing some data in the analysis.

6. Context-Specific Findings:

The research is based on the FMCG industry in the United Kingdom, and therefore the results could not be relevant to other industries of other countries (Tanudiharjo et al. 2021). In researching the case, it is well expressed that variation in sectors and countries results in different forms of supply chain challenges and/or constraints coupled with differences in the way the research is regulated in other countries.

However, the limitations highlighted in the study can be considered when discussing the findings of the study and the efficacy of the UK FMCG sector supply chains. These limitations should be acknowledged to inform future research directions and promote less biassed and more versatile investigations of supply chain vulnerability with the aim to improve supply chain risk management in various settings.

3.8 Ethical considerations

It is important to consider some ethical issues when discussing supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector in the UK (Carissimi et al. 2023). Firstly, participant’s consent sought from all of them, whereby they comprehend the aim and scope of the study, their contribution, and utilisation of their data. Based on this, participants bear in mind that they are free to participate and that they can withdraw at any time they wish to.

Participants have been assured that the information they disclose will not be disclosed to third parties or used to compromise a participant’s position in the supply chain as the strategies and threats are business critical. Data are being disguised, where it is necessary to exclude personal references that might provide information about the persons or companies involved in the study.

Finally, the research has no negative impact whereby no undesirable consequences should be brought to the participants or their organisations because of the study. Any data has been kept and processed with proper consideration and conformance to the laws and regulations of data protection as for example, GDPR of the United Kingdom.

3.9 Summary 

This study analyses supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG industry employing the qualitative research strategy with emphasis on FMCG manager’s interview. It is important for identifying factors that may influence administrative tools that enhance resilience and organisational practices. The study also has constraints such as; It has less data coverage, It is subjective, and supply chains are evolutionary. From analysing the collected qualitative data, the study aims at offering understanding to FMCG organisations on how they manage disruptions, in order to strengthen supply chains, as well as offering a guideline on how resilience can be fortified in such an important industry.

CHAPTER 4: FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS

4.1 Introduction

The UK FMCG industry is adopting digital technologies including AI, IoT, Blockchain, and cloud computing to make the supply chains more resilient. These technologies help in proper dissemination of information and reduce the tendency for stockouts and overstocking. However, high upfront expenses, threat of cybersecurity, challenges over technology, and issues regarding data privacy are acting as the restraining forces for its adoption. It needs to overcome those obstacles by having a clear digital strategy, stakeholder engagement, connection with technology suppliers, and investment in training. The other issues that this business faces are logistics, regulatory compliance, environmental issues, and geopolitical conflicts. The integration of these technologies helps industries to meet market demand and manage the complexity of supply chains.

Supply chain resilience can be enhanced through digital technologies including AI, blockchain, cloud computing, IoT devices, and RPA. Supply chain resilience can be managed through various techniques using digital technology: data-driven decision-making, supplier diversity, agile supply chain design, staff training, and partnerships and cooperation. While supplier variety reduces dependency risk, data-driven decision making involves investment in analytics tools for the review of supply chain data. Yet, high upfront costs, challenges of integration, perils of cyber, data quality issues, the gap in skills, management of change, sensitivity regarding culture and data privacy, and loss of jobs-each of them acts as a stumbling block to their implementation.

The transportation manager for the FMCG industry in the UK, a 55-year-old, pointed out supply chain vulnerability drivers such as driver shortage, fuel price volatility, traffic and weather, capacity constraints, unpredictable demand, supply chain visibility, cybersecurity threats, and worsening road infrastructure. All of these could be potential issues that may hit the whole resilience of the supply chain, probably impacting economics, efficiency, and dependability of the transport operations. It’s important to apply digital technologies like EDI, blockchain, digital twin, drones, autonomous cars, cloud-based platforms, GPS tracking, Internet of Things sensors, AI, and ML to improve supply chain resilience. Digital technologies like predictive analytics, machine learning, IoT sensors, blockchain, automation, robotics, control tower approach, and culture promotion are utilized to manage supply chain resilience (Ashfaq, 2022). However, these may be quite effectively hampered by challenges in high installation costs, integration issues, data integrity, cybersecurity, and cultural reluctance to change.

It reduces stockouts and overstocking, and ensures efficient processing. Digital technology contributes to customer satisfaction, efficiency, visibility, and attainment of sustainability criteria. There are several challenges, including high upfront cost, resistance to change, cybersecurity threat, integration challenge, and data privacy concern. Those businesses that have already begun to tap into the power of digital technologies pay a great deal of attention to resilience, deftly negotiate the complexities of the supply chain, and efficiently meet the demands of the market. These tools, when effectively integrated, can significantly improve operational capabilities and establish a strong reputation for responsiveness and reliability. Adaptability and creative problem-solving lie at the heart of long-term success in a UK FMCG environment characterised by unpredictability and rapid change (Sony and Mekoth, 2022).

Resilience challenges that the UK FMCG industry must cope with include a vast number of suppliers, hidden, poorly communicated, vulnerable to cyberattacks, with little standardisation, and relying extensively on manual processes. Some digital technologies capable of improving supply chain resilience are blockchain, IoT sensors, digital twins, and cybersecurity solutions. Other ways of managing resilience involve IoT sensors attached to products or pallets, development of a cloud-based supply chain visibility platform, block-chain technology, and predictive analytics models. Some benefits accrued through digital technologies are increased visibility, demand forecasting, agility in decision-making, coordination with suppliers, automation, efficiency, customer delight, cost reduction, adherence to regulatory requirements, recoverability, sustainability amongst others. These are high up-front costs, integration obstacles, cyber dangers, problems concerning data quality, skills gap, change management, cultural sensitivity, data privacy, and job losses. Digital technologies are vital in the development of a stronger supply chain, as the technologies offer a business vision, flexibility, and insight into a complex business world.

The 55-year-old Transportation Manager in the FMCG industry in the UK identifies supply chain vulnerabilities such as shortages of drivers, volatile fuel prices, traffic, weather, capacity limitations, unpredictable demand, supply chain visibility, cybersecurity threats, and deteriorating road infrastructure. Each one of these challenges may have an impact on the resilience of the whole supply chain and thus an impact on the economics, efficiency, and dependability of transport operations. Digital technologies such as EDI, blockchain, digital twins, drones, autonomous cars, cloud-based platforms, GPS tracking, Internet of Things sensors, AI, and ML help supply chain resilience (Pettit, Wang and Beresford, 2022). Supply chain resilience can be managed using blockchain, cloud-based platforms, IoT sensors, predictive analytics, robotics, automation, control tower approach, digital platforms, risk management, and innovation culture promotion. However, there are various issues that may hamper the deployment of digital technology, including high costs of setup, integration, data quality, cybersecurity, and cultural aversion to change.

4.3 Analysis of the Findings

4.3.1. Assessment of Supply Chain Resilience Challenges in the UK FMCG Sector

The FMCG industry is quite an integral part of the UK economy, goods that are purchased quickly but tend to be fairly cheap. This consists of foodstuffs, beverages, toiletries, and other consumables. In 2021, the FMCG market in the UK was valued at approximately £173 billion, while the grocery segment accounted for a significant share of that valuation (admin_purestaff, 2023). The sector has high competition, low margins, and fast turnover, which adds to some peculiar challenges in supply chain management. FMCG is a very consumer-oriented sector that might change drastically due to trends, seasons, and even economic conditions. With the rise of e-commerce, especially the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw online grocery sales surge 113%, the landscape has continued to change (Galushko and Riabchyk, 2024). This continued growth is an indication that supply chains should be agile to meet altering consumer preferences. Probably one of the most dramatic challenges facing the FMCG sector, volatility of demand is one of the leading concerns. Trends, seasons, and unplanned events-like health crises-can vary tremendously in consumer tastes and preferences. A recent study by the BRC in 2022 found that the volatile habits of consumers through the pandemic have resulted in fluctuations in demand from FMCG companies in 75% of instances (Żurek et al., 2024). 

It is these unforeseen changes in trends that make inventory management much more complex and result in overstocking or stockouts, thereby denting profitability or customer satisfaction. The inability to forecast demand precisely may lead to a wastage of resources. For instance, a report by Deloitte in 2021 estimated that inventory distortion-overstock or understock-costs UK retailers an estimated £1.1 billion yearly (Falatouri et al., 2022). This challenge requires more sophisticated forecasting methods and agile supply chain responses. The other important challenge relates to the reliability of suppliers. Very often, the FMCG sector depends on a network of suppliers for raw materials, packaging, and logistics. The disruptions in any part of the network would result in considerable delays and an increase in cost. According to a survey conducted by the Institute of Supply Chain Management, 67% of FMCG firms reported issues concerning the reliability of suppliers in the year 2022 on account of geopolitical tensions, trade barriers, and logistical bottlenecks (KPMG, 2023).

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted pointedly how fragile supply chains are in this world. The closure of Asian factories affected the UK economy’s essential commodities availability, highlighting the vulnerability of interdependent supply chains to local interruptions. Companies should now consider diversification of their supplier base and closer relationships with key suppliers to diminish such risks. Logistics are very crucial in the FMCG sector, wherein timely delivery is absolutely essential. About 75% of all goods transported in the UK are moved via road freight transport; hence, the infrastructure remains highly utilised. However, more often than not, logistical disruptions have increased on a number of touchpoints, starting with traffic congestion and advancing through driver shortages to port delays. A shortage in the number of HGV drivers in the UK reached a bit of a crisis situation in 2021, with estimates being that there was a shortfall of about 100,000 drivers (Lavri, 2023). This directly impacted the ability of FMCG companies to deliver products in time, and the result was empty shelves and lost sales. Furthermore, the ongoing implications of Brexit have brought additional complications, such as customs delays and extra paperwork, exacerbating logistics challenges. The regulatory environment is continuously changing, thereby setting up a high level of impact on the sector of FMCG. Adhering to health and safety standards, environmental regulations, and labelling requirements is a drain on resources and complicates supply chains. For example, new regulations instituted following Brexit meant that FMCG businesses had to redefine supply chains in line with different trading standards now in place with the EU.

A 2022 survey by KPMG found that for 58% of FMCGs, the main priority of regulatory compliance-especially sustainability-is growing demand for green products (KPMG, 2022). Pressure to make sure supply chains deliver on this drives operations that are increasingly complex and costly. The UK’s economic climate-including inflation rates and changes in the spending power of consumers-continues to have a strong bearing on the sector. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the weaknesses in supply chains, and geopolitics, such as what is currently happening in Ukraine, has resulted in rising energy prices that have impacted transportation and the stability of supply chains in general.

4.3.2 Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Digital Technologies in Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience in the UK FMCG Sector

In this regard, the integration of digital technologies into the supply chain operations has become critical to enhancing resilience, particularly in the FMCG sector within the UK. The key digital technologies in this area include the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, and big data analytics. IoT applications will involve smart shelves, temperature sensors for perishable goods, and RFID tags for managing inventories. It is forecasted that the IoT market will reach a value of $1.6 trillion by 2025, with supply chain applications named among some of the most prominent investments. The use of IoT in supply chains is likely to enhance their resilience through the facilitation of real-time insights into both the levels of inventory and the condition of products. IoT solutions have been used, for instance, by Tesco in monitoring stock levels and optimising the processes of stock replacement with the effect of minimising the waste of food and enhancing service levels. Artificial Intelligence covers machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics.

Big data analytics is the methodology of looking at large volumes of data to identify patterns, trends, and even correlations. Big data analytics would apply to FMCG in order to make supply chains work more efficiently by bringing in better demand forecasting, reducing wastages, and enhancing efficiency. A study concerning big data analytics at the World Economic Forum estimated that companies able to apply big data analytics to their supply chains could reduce operational costs as high as 15-20% (Yu et al., 2021). This can enable companies to monitor changes in consumer behavior and adjust supply chain strategies, enhancing resilience in the process. Digital technologies can improve supply chain resilience by improving visibility, enabling predictive analytics, enabling agile responses, and addressing concerns about data security. IoT devices and big data analytics help them get timely insights into the level of inventory, shipment status, and fluctuations in demand. It facilitates proactive monitoring of the supply chain by the firm and its ability to react to potential disruptions before they start to mushroom. Predictive analytics, driven by AI and big data, empowers these companies to forecast demand with higher precision, anticipate potential disruptions, and act accordingly. Through this, companies analyze the historical data of the market and external factors and make decisions based on that to build resilience in their supply chain.

Most FMCG companies operate on old and obsolete systems that might not integrate with newer technologies. To eliminate integration problems, the companies must be absolutely clear about their digital strategy and how these technologies can be fitted into the structure of operations. For implementing digital technologies successfully, skilled workforces should be available to deal with and analyse data. Most FMCG firms are short on the required talent in areas related to data analytics, AI, and IoT. Companies therefore have to invest in training and development to upskill their workforce for this area. Collaboration between companies and educational institutions and industry organisations can also help create a pipeline of talent with the right skill-sets to work in a digital supply chain environment.

4.3.3 Developing a Roadmap for Managing Supply Chain Resilience Using Digital Technologies in the UK FMCG Sector

The UK FMCG industry is using digital technologies in the supply chain for resilience. IoT sensors monitor, in real-time, the environmental conditions of manufacturing, retail, storage, and warehouses to maintain product quality and safety. Sensors offer real-time monitoring, automatic deviation warnings, improved product quality, reduced spoilage, safety, improved supply chain visibility, and data-driven informed decisions. Blockchain technology itself embodies transparency, traceability, and security in the supply chain and is also implemented to bring up resilience (Azmi et al., 2022). It allows product tracking, automation of rules and business logic, heightened productivity, and such. In general, blockchain technology implementations require identification of use cases, choice of a platform, development of smart contracts, integration of current systems, training of staff, and testing for security audits. Examples of this include predictive analytics for supply chain process optimisation, interruption detection, and demand forecasting, bringing cost-effectiveness, detection of interruption, optimisation, and effective forecasts.

The benefits of cloud-based technologies could also enable supply chain management, providing real network visibility in real time, with sharing and collaboration. Real-time collaboration, data sharing, end-to-end visibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness are the main advantages a company may obtain. Setting up the cloud-hosted platforms to meet specific company requirements can be integrated into existing systems. Employee education ensures that such platforms are easily understood and put into practice. It enables cloud-based solutions for order management, inventory management, transportation management, warehouse management, supplier management, demand forecasting, analytics, and reporting. Some of the security and compliance functions are: ensuring data encryption and access controls, legal standards, routine patching, and upgrading of software (Pelluru, 2021). A digital twin can also be built to assess resilience strategies for FMCG industries. This includes predictive analytics, scenario planning, testing, and simulation, real-time monitoring, and collaboration. Sample scenarios include natural disasters, supplier bankruptcy or quality failure, transportation disruptions, demand surges or unexpected changes in direction, and data loss or cybersecurity intrusion. The features that a digital twin embodies include visualisation, modeling, analytics, collaboration, and integration with Internet of Things sensors and other data sources. Stronger readiness for disruptions, greater strategic planning and decision-making, lower risk and better contingency planning, more flexibility and adaptation, and stronger network collaboration and communication are just some of the benefits associated with supply chain resilience. Adopting digital technologies has huge potential to highly improve supply chain resilience within the UK FMCG industry (Ralston and Blackhurst, 2020). This integration of IoT sensors, blockchain technologies, predictive analytics, and cloud-based platforms increases the responsiveness, robustness, and interconnectivity of the supply chain in an enterprise.

Investment in cybersecurity would thus be very critical, as FMCG firms ensure that their supply chain data is protected and there are no disruptions. Some key benefits of investing in cybersecurity include stakeholder confidence, protection of data integrity, supply chain integrity, reduction of risks, assurance of compliance, and business continuity. Cybersecurity protocols might refer to a number of things: say, access controls, encryption of data, network security, training of staff, incident response, vulnerability management, and penetration testing. It is also suggested that one make a cybersecurity awareness program, conduct periodic security audits and risk assessments, plan for disaster recovery, and explore cyber insurance to minimise financial risks. FMCG firms can prevent the breach of supply chain data, avoid disruption of business, and ensure business continuity by investing in cybersecurity. AI-driven chatbots could be important to help increase supply chain resilience and improve customer service experience (Ghosh, Ness and Salunkhe, 2024). Some of the key features that these chatbots would offer include real-time updates, proactive engagement, proactive customer support, 24*7 customer support, personalisation, reduction in number of queries at a help desk, and better satisfaction of customers. The implementation involves selection of an appropriate chatbot platform and integration of the chatbot with supply chain, CRM, and ERP. Scripting, testing, and training form a part of the process. This means end-to-end supply chain visibility through the deployment of supply chain visibility technologies like RFID, barcode scanning, and GPS monitoring, thus reacting quickly to any interruptions. Some benefits include quicker identification and resolution of issues, risks can be managed and mitigated further, higher agility and flexibility, and making better decisions with data-driven insights. Co-opetitive networks among suppliers, logistics companies, and further stakeholders could also be initiated in order to take the resilience in supply chains even further. The various phases of risk assessment include risk possibility determination, determination of the impact of the risk, ranking of risks, making plans to mitigate the risk, execution of the made plans, and monitoring their effectiveness. These might include natural disasters, supply chain disruptions, cybersecurity attacks, market and economic contractions, changes in regulations, or compliance issues, quarterly, semiannual, and annual stress tests. Supply chain resilience has a number of advantages, including proactive identification of vulnerabilities, focused mitigation techniques, better risk management and mitigation, greater agility and flexibility within supply chains, and greater preparedness in terms of disruption and emergencies. These strategies will help FMCG organisations to develop supply chain resilience, reduce disruptions, and ensure business continuity in an ever-changing market environment.

4.4 Discussion

Some of the interview findings, related to the factors hindering the supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG sector were demand fluctuations, macro-level events such as Brexit and COVID 19 pandemic, unreliable suppliers, and disrupted logistics networks. All of these correspond to the first objective of evaluating the supply chain challenges that face the sector (Yang, Fu and Zhang, 2021). The interviews also focused on how the fluctuations of demand results in poor inventory management and how geopolitical tensions tend to result in delay of project and subsequent increase in costs. Also, HGV driver scarcity and rules for sustainability make this problem worse. In the UK FMCG industry, digital technologies could raise productivity and consumer happiness while serving the environmental concern and reducing the risks (Mariani and Fosso Wamba, 2020). AI and automation can accelerate workflows and lower operating costs while increasing response times faster. However, some challenges are high upfront costs, resistance to manage the change, cybersecurity threats, and data privacy concerns. Strategic fit and cultural fit are necessary for addressing critical choices in managing the complexity and meeting the expectations of the growing market.

Agile supply chain architecture allows quick adaptation to changes either in supply or demand (Shashi et al., 2020). Digital technologies can help them  achieve thresholds of sustainability, customer satisfaction, and efficiency while gaining visibility. They also meet legal requirements, ensure carbon footprint tracking and reduction, as well as the acquisition of eco-sensitive customers. During the second part of the study, the participants pointed at AI, IoT, blockchain, and employing the cloud computing as the means to improve the supply chain vulnerability. The application of these technologies enhances demand forecasting, supply chain transparency, and flexibility so as to reduce disruptions. However, the respondents have also described further problems with the introduction of these technologies, which have incorporated high initial costs, integration problems, data inaccuracy, and cyber-incidents. However, based on the totality of the information gathered, the participants were optimistic that the supply chain resilience can thrive through the utilization of digital technologies that results to efficiency, customer satisfaction, and unique decision-making authorities.

Digital technologies can provide information, flexibility, and visibility to a business to help be more transparent (Dolgui and Ivanov, 2021). Improves demand forecasting and optimisation of operations and predicts disruption. It minimises processes or reduces them. It requires less startling consistency in monitoring and investment in digital technologies that result in a far stronger supply chain. Furthermore, these solutions meet all the sustainability criteria and are able to provide carbon footprint measurements. Challenges persist in the form of high upfront costs, resistance towards management change, cybersecurity threats, and data privacy concerns. Digital solutions are expected to play a pivotal role in managing supply chain complexity and meeting market demands in the rapidly evolving FMCG industry (Nozari et al., 2021).

Environmental concerns such as climate change, resource depletion, waste management shape the supply chain strategies. The ambitious UK government targets to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 further pressurise the companies to re-evaluate and work towards better sustainability (GOV.UK, 2020). Supply chains contribute more than 80% to a company’s carbon footprint, and hence environmental sustainability is very important for businesses to implement. Events around the world, such as pandemics, natural disasters, and geopolitical conflicts, could also severely affect supply chains.  Demand forecasting, inventory optimisation, and customer insights are also done using AI within FMCG. In a study by McKinsey in 2023, it became clear that companies leveraging AI in their supply chain operations were able to achieve a 20-30% gain in efficiency (psico-smart.com, 2022). Blockchain technology provides a decentralised, immutable ledger, hence improving the supply chain a lot in terms of transparency and traceability. Blockchain can be utilised in the FMCG industry for product tracking based on its adherence to safety standards and ethics of sourcing. A Deloitte report states that 40% of FMCG executives operating in the sector believe blockchain will have a profound impact on supply chain operations by 2025 (Hasan et al., 2022). It is due to blockchain that transparency injects itself into supply chains, enabling firms to quickly identify disruptions and devise solutions so that resilience can be built up.

In one report, Cybersecurity Ventures projected that due to cybercrime, estimated annual costs can reach $10.5 trillion by 2025 (Sharif and Mohammed, 2022). It also called for additional cybersecurity measures in organizations accordingly. Sometimes, incorporating new digital technologies into the already existing system is an extremely time-consuming and tiresome process. Shared knowledge and experience, improved coordination and communication, strengthened relations and trust, flexibility and adaptation, and improved risk reduction and management are just a few of the key advantages. The elements that make up a collaborative network approach include establishing a common platform, setting common goals and objectives, data and best-practice sharing, mapping of key stakeholders, and building trust through regular participation and feedback. Regular risk assessments and stress testing are important for the identification of any vulnerabilities and the development of targeted mitigation strategies (Mishra et al., 2020).

Meeting the third objective of establishing the roadmap, there is an idea to plan the digital technology’s implementation in phases. This involves acquisitions in tools such as data analytics, forming strategic alliances with technology vendors, and nurturing workers’ absorptive capacity. Likewise, utilizing end-to-end visibility platform and predictive analytical tools go a long way in preparing and preventing disruption. When integrating different segments in supply chain and handling the issue of cybersecurity risks appropriately, the FMCG companies can improve the construction of the supply chain, thus indicating a higher level of flexibility and responsiveness to shifting market developments.

4.4 Summary

The FMCG sector in the UK enhances supply chain resilience through the usage of digital technologies like AI, IoT, Blockchain, and cloud computing. The technologies enhance information sharing and reduce stockouts and overstocking. Huge initial costs are some of the challenges that come up, including cybersecurity threats, technological issues, and data privacy issues. Accordingly, supply chain managers should have a proper digital strategy while engaging all stakeholders in nurturing the business through developing relationships with technology suppliers and investing in training. Other weaknesses inherent in the sector involve driver shortage, changing fuel prices, and environmental concerns. Digital technologies thus become important for improving supply chain resilience and business continuity against these challenges.

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Conclusion

Supply chains in FMCG are faced with many UK-based bottlenecks because of interaction between customers and decision makers along the various steps of physical distribution, manufacture, wholesale, and retail. These can be overcome by enhancing digitalisation and automation of the supply chain through industry-based technology implementation. These include blockchain, Internet of Things, and machine learning algorithms. The potential benefits brought forth by digital innovations could therefore enhance resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness. The resilient supply chains apply flexible forecasting and contingency planning to adapt to operational disruptions. The FMCG sector is projected to experience a CAGR of 5.4% in the next five years, reaching a value of approximately $15,361.8 billion by 2025 (Becher, 2022). E-commerce also keeps on growing at a far better pace compared to traditional business, and FMCG companies started feeling new opportunities due to customers who want greener and healthier products. Due to prolonged growth and complexity of the supply lines, the organisations operating within the FMCG sector are highly vulnerable to disruption. For the above-mentioned reason, KM is greatly essential for ensuring supply chain resilience. The goal of supply chain resilience should be accomplished by businesses through accurate inventory control, strategic planning, and the establishment of collaborative alliances. The Brexit epidemic developed demand for certain goods, hampered manufacture and distribution, and the supply chain. Lessons learned from past crises and the role of coordinating resources in nurturing or enhancing the elasticity of the avenues of transportation need to inform resilience at the level of supply chains. There is a need for commitment to governance, social justice, and the environment for an FMCG industry to be sustainable. The UK FMCG industry has a long way to go before supply chain resilience is achieved. Embracing sustainable practices, geopolitical issues, and implementing digital transformation are some of the ways through which businesses can cope better with the dynamic supply chain environment for long-term success.

Different challenges affect the FMCG industry, such as volatility in the market, supply chain breakdowns, sustainability, and integrating new technologies. The sector needs digital transformation for openness, responsiveness, and consumer involvement. 47% of FMCG companies mark projection as critical to innovation in the year 2024 since correct forecasting can increase the resilience in the supply chain (Sarker et al., 2022). The dynamic nature of the business environment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic requires more collaboration, integration, and reorganisation of external and internal resources and talents to minimise disruptions. Resilient supply chains will enable firms to get through current challenges and set up a solid, adaptable future. The methodology of this research is interpretivism, in that it studies stakeholder experiences in the UK FMCG supply chain and helps identify strategies to improve the organisational preparedness of firms for disruptors. Testing hypotheses to find those variables which will enhance the supply chain resilience in the UK involves empirical data collection from FMCG firms through a deductive research technique. The FMCG sector in the UK is adopting digital technologies like cloud computing, blockchain, IoT, and AI to enhance supply chain resilience (Shakur et al., 2024). These technologies ensure efficient processing and help reduce stockouts and overstocking. In any case, issues such as high upfront prices, cybersecurity risks, and data privacy concerns make for inferior adoption. These challenges require investment in training, stakeholder participation, and a clear digital strategy for the sector.

With data-driven decision-making, supplier diversity, agile supply chain design, employee training, and collaboration, digital solutions could enhance supply chain resilience. In addition, the benefits of digital technologies include sustainability, efficiency, visibility, and customer delight. A number of challenges persisting are high upfront costs, resistance to change, cyber threats, integration complexity, and data privacy. There has been the use of digital technology in enhancing supply chain resilience within the UK FMCG sector. IoT sensors monitor the atmosphere within production, retail, storage, and houses to keep the products safe and of quality. The transparency, traceability, and security provided by blockchain technology across the supply chain allow product tracking, automation, and increased productivity (Sunny, Undralla and Madhusudanan Pillai, 2020). Cloud-based technologies make supply chain management more cost-effective while enabling real-time collaboration and data sharing. It is very important to invest in cybersecurity for business continuity and supply chain data security. AI-enabled chatbots will improve customer service, adding more resiliency to the supply chain. Also, risk assessments and regular stress tests must be performed to find the weak points and create focused mitigation plans.

5.2 Research Limitation

A number of major limitations characterise this study on the resilience of supply chains in the FMCG sector of the UK. These include lack of standardisation and academic research regarding resilience measurement, complexity of strategy implementation, geopolitical influence, constraint on data availability and confidentiality, industry specificity, time and resource constraints, and dynamic supply chains. The limitations of resilience methods may make their application in specific industries challenging, necessitating a deep understanding of the subject matter. The research design thus needs to be planned in a way to help the researcher get over such limitations (Tomaszewski, Zarestky and Gonzalez, 2020). This would provide the right platform for incisive analysis relating to supply chain resilience of the FMCG sector of the UK economy. Being aware of such limitations, the researchers can thus think about an agenda of study that is capable of providing real value concerning resilience in this industry and its ability to adjust to a changing climate. They are contributing to the continuous efforts of improving supply chain resilience in the UK FMCG sector.

5.3 Future Prospects

The areas for future research opportunities in the study of supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector of the UK may be formed around innovation and entrepreneurship, policy and regulatory implications, supply chain risk management, supply chain visibility, and transparency. Collaborative resilience strategies, sustainability, digitalisation, global supply chain risks, and risk management comprise dimensions that could form future research coupled with embedding within other disciplines. The research directions will be in the areas of global supply chain risk effects, resilience strategies, transparency, innovation, implications of policies, human factors, sustainable logistics, circular economy, reduction in carbon footprint, stakeholder engagement, sustainable packaging, and adoption of digitalisation and technology.

5.4 Recommendations

The UK FMCG business is recommended to develop a risk management framework to enhance supply chain resilience challenges, involving risk assessment and mitigation throughout the entire supply chain. To enhance resilience, a comprehensive risk management frameworkcomprises risk governance, monitoring and review, risk assessment, risk identification, and communication and reporting of risks.

A company within FMCG can track shipments, manage inventories, analyse performance to find out anomalies, and improve forecasting using supply chain visibility tools. Digital technologies play a crucial role in managing these challenges. These include GPS tracking, RFID, barcode scanning, IoT sensors, cloud-based platforms, data analytics software, and supply chain management systems. These tools facilitate real-time insight into product movement. Some of the hot technologies in demand for all this Supply chain visibility tools include SCM, TMS, WMS, barcode scanning, RFID, cloud-based platforms, Internet of Things sensors, GPS tracking, and data analytics software (Holtschulte, 2022).

A roadmap for managing SC resilience should include developing cooperative relationships with suppliers, logistics companies, and other stakeholders is indispensable in any supply chain. On the issues of technology enablement in support, regular communication, setting expectations clearly, trust-transparency, solving problems collaboratively, performance metrics, training and development opportunities, incentives and rewards, sharing risks, flexibility, adaptability empowered through technology, FMCG companies take forward supply chain resilience, better communication, heightened trust, innovation motivation, cost reduction, quality enhancement, agility, and risk management.

The only way to act quickly on disruptions, changing consumer demand, and shifting market conditions is by investing in the agility of the supply chain. Modular supply chain design, in concert with flexible manufacturing and multisourcing, is pursued to create supply chains that can flex and adapt (Badejo and Ierapetritou, 2022). Delay strategy, dynamic inventory management, real-time visibility, collaborative planning, and scenario planning, investment in blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things are some of the tactics used.

It is also suggested that a business continuity plan should be developed, and investment in personnel training and development; implementation of appropriate environmental practices; regular risk assessments are performed. A diverse base of suppliers should be encouraged, innovation and technology harnessed, a supply chain resilience team developed, and a communication plan formulated. With these recommendations implemented, FMCG companies in the UK can make their supply chains resilient and therefore respond in a professional manner to disruptions.

Yes, I completely agree with this. Most certainly, they absolutely agree that the supply chain resilience of FMCG in the UK is facing big challenges. First, demand volatility, established by economic fluctuation, change in consumer preference, and seasonal variation, is the main challenge. Besides these, external disruptions-like Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic-have shown that supply chains are vulnerable to delays and increased costs. Add to that the complication of an international supply chain with a variety of geopolitical tensions and trade regulations adding their own flavor of unpredictability. Sustainability involves balancing operational efficiency with environmental friendliness.

2. What digital technologies are used for supply chain resilience in the FMCG sector in the UK?

In this regard, digital-determined key technologies include artificial intelligence for demand forecasting, the Internet of Things regarding real-time inventory and logistics monitoring, blockchain for transparency and traceability, and cloud computing for managing data between supply chain partners. These technologies will facilitate the firm in reducing the probability of stockouts and overstocking of goods in inventories, enhance the transparency of transactions, and ensure smooth processing. This, in turn, helps in maintaining better communication and taking well-versed decisions.

3. According to you what strategies can be developed to manage supply chain resilience using digital technologies in the FMCG sector in the UK?

As per my opinion supply chain resilience can be enhanced using AI and data analytics to improve demand forecasting and inventory management. Suppliers, manufacturing, and retailers can use different digital platforms to have better collaboration in responding faster in the event of disruption. Investment can be made in supply chain visibility solutions, such as IoT devices and tracking software that give real-time visibility into supply chain issues. Sound contingency planning can be done for a number of disruptions with the help of digital tools, presenting an opportunity to effectively communicate and prepare.

4. What are the benefits of implementing digital technologies in enhancing supply chain resilience within the UK FMCG sector?

The supply chain resilience for the UK FMCG industry can hugely be improved by the use of digital technologies. This would be facilitated by enabling real-time visibility, automation of procedures, supplying collaboration, managing inventories better, making enterprises agile, better decision-making, product quality, reduction in costs, customer satisfaction, adherence to regulatory elements, supply chain flexibility, reduced carbon footprint, asset utilisation, and enhancing knowledge sharing. With the application of these technologies, supply chain managers can build a far more flexible, efficient, and resilient chain that can absorb disruptions and changing market conditions much better.

5.What are the challenges or disadvantages associated with implementing digital technologies in enhancing supply chain resilience within the UK FMCG sector?

The reasons for the UK FMCG industries not being able to strengthen supply chains are high upfront investments, complex technology integration, data quality issues, cybersecurity concerns, overreliance on technology, lack of skill, change management, cultural opposition, and non-digital partnerships. Clear digital strategy, stakeholder’s engagement, investment in training, and partnership with technology providers will help them to overcome the challenges. This can also be improved by blockchain, AI, IoT sensors, cloud-based platforms, and robotics for data-driven decision making, visibility, demand forecast, risk management, collaboration, efficiency, productivity, reduction of costs, quality of products, and inventory management.

6. What is your final thought on digital technologies playing great roles in developing a road map to develop a more resilient supply chain?

I think digital technologies are the basis on which supply chain managers base their plans and work out a roadmap for a resilient supply chain. They enable data-driven decision-making, extended collaboration, real-time visibility, predictive analytics, and automation. Productivity, agility, transparency, efficiency, and a customer-oriented mindset could be increased, while costs could be cut by implementing cloud computing, blockchain, AI, and IoT technologies. It would be executed in some steps: assessment of the state of digital maturity, locating development areas, creating a perfectly clear digital strategy, investment in digital infrastructure and technology, and cultivation of an innovative and always-learning culture. With digital technology integration, the supply chains become resilient to handle various kinds of disturbances and can thrive in a highly dynamic and complex environment.
